Walter „Wolfman“ Washington & the Roadmasters spielt schon `The Funky Thing` seit es Funk gibt. Tatsächlich als ich George Clinton fragte, wie er zum Funk kam, sagte er: es war eine Platte im Radio: `Get out of my Life Woman` das war der Funk.“ Clinton sprach über Lee Dorsay, `the bump and fender man` in New Orleans, und Wolfman war sein Gitarrist als Lee mit seiner heissen Single für Amy Records tourte. Wolfman ist ein New Orleanser und gehört in die Tradition der lokalen Heimatphilosophen wie z.B. Lee Dorsay, Professor Longhair, Earl King, Eddie Bo, Fats Domino, Jessie Hill and Wolf`s Cousin , Ernie K-Doe, er ist ein tiefer Denker und Meistermusiker.

Dieses Programm präsentiert Wolf von der allerbesten Seite in jeder Kategorie: schreiben, arrangieren, singen, Gitarre spielen und die Band leiten. Er hat immer seine `horn section` getragen, auch wenn oft von der wirtschaftlichen Seite geschlagen und unvernünftig. Nun aber ist es soweit die `horn section` flüstert, unterstreicht, singt und schreit wie eine Verlängerung von Wolfmans musikalischer Persönlichkeit…………
Wolfman hat niemals aufgehört in seiner geballten Ausdrucksweise als Künstler zu wachsen was ihn in seiner Reife zu einem höher errungenen meisterlichen zeitgemäßen Blueskomponisten mit intelligentem und großen persönlichen sozialen Eigenschaften macht. Walter „Wolfman“ Washington & the Roadmasters have been doin`the funky thing as long as there`s been a funky thing to do. In fact, when I asked George Clinton one time about how he got into the funk, he said, “There was this record on the radio: `Get Out of My Life Woman` and that was sure enough the funk”. Clinton was talking about Lee Dorsay, the bump and fender man from the 9th Ward in New Orleans, and Wolfman was his guitar player when Lee toured behind his hot single for Amy Records.
Wolfman is New Orleans to the bone, and in the tradition of hometown musical philosophers like Lee Dorsay`s guitarist. He spent some time backing Irma thomas and worked with David Lastle & A Taste of New Orleans before entering a 20 – year musical partnership with the great Johnny Adams.
Doin`The Funky Thing is an impressive an consistently moving achievement by an artist in the fullness of his maturity and a big step forward for the Wolfman as a contemporary blues composer.
This program presents Wolf at his very best in every category: writing, arranging, singing, playing guitar and directing the band. He`s always bucked the economics and common sense of touring by carrying his own horn section at all times, and by now the horns whisper, punctuate, sing and shout like a natural extension of the Wolfman`s musical personality….
Wolfman has never stopped growing as a creative artist working in the urban blues idiom, and his persistence has brought him in his maturity to an even higher level of accomplishment as a masterful contemporary blues composer who deals with intelligence and grace issues of great social and personal import.
